Juneteenth
Juneteeth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. It recognizes June 19, 1865, when in Galveston, Texas, Union Gen. Gordon Granger announced freedom for all slaves, 2 1/2 years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which became official on Jan. 1, 1863. The Library Partnership celebrates this event with music and dance performances by local artists, an "Idol"-type competition for local middle and high school singers, guest speakers, a free raffle for a various prizes (televisions, etc.), door prizes and refreshments.
